Scale in the Real World

Headwaters North is the Eastern Upper Peninsula's SmartZone, a state-recognized business accelerator backing tech founders, innovation teams, and industry. We're here to help you build.

A SmartZone is a designation, not a building. Ours says state-recognized business accelerator for the EUP.

We specialize in hard tech and real-world solutions. Starting a new business like a coffee shop? Head on over to the Small Business Support Hub (SBSH). They are your people. Building a sensor that needs to survive a Great Lakes winter? You are in the right place.

Who Are You?

How We Back You

Set the foundation

Company formation. Business planning. Customer discovery.

Protect and prototype.

IP and patent work. Design for manufacturing. MVP support.

Get to market.

Fundraising and capital prep. Testing. Partner connections.

Plug into the network.

Service providers, consultants, the right people. The bench you do not have yet.

From Idea to Impact in Three Steps

Whether you're starting from scratch or growing a legacy, we provide the navigation you need.

1. Discover

Bring us your raw ideas, napkin sketches, or operational hurdles. We’ll sit down together to untangle your immediate challenges and map out a clear, actionable starting point tailored to your business goals.

2. Build

This is where the heavy lifting happens. We plug you into a real network of regional partners, guide you through data-driven planning, and help you establish the operational foundations required to confidently scale.

3. Grow

Take your project to the mainstream. We assist you in unlocking funding pathways, tracking your performance metrics, and equipping your team to turn early momentum into a lasting legacy.

The EUP is YOUR Testbed

Two Fields for Flight and Airspace Testing

Chippewa County International (the former Kincheloe Air Force Base): 7,200 feet of concrete (once 12,000 for the Air Force), still able to handle Air Force One. Sault Ste. Marie Municipal (Sanderson Field): 5,234 feet and a U.S. Port of Entry. Wide, low-traffic airspace for aviation, unmanned systems, and cold-weather flight testing.

Soo Locks

About $1 trillion in commercial goods move through annually. The freight, the freshwater, and the engineering all converge here.

International bridge plus Canadian universities.

Smithers Winter Test Center at Raco

800 acres of winter proving ground. 50-plus years of vehicle and tire testing for major OEMs. Ice circles, mile-long runways, split-mu surfaces, cold-soak freezers, EV fast charging.

Rivers, streams, and lakes

About 20% of the world's surface fresh water at our door. Cold-climate and ice-conditions testing that is rare and commercially critical.

Quarries

Working quarries in Cedarville, Drummond Island, and Rogers City (one of the largest in the world). Mining, materials, and surface tech in the real environment.

Cloverland Hydro

Water-powered renewable energy plant. Built where the water actually is.

NOAA Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary

About 1,500 miles of Canadian border, federal marine sanctuary, U.S. Coast Guard and USACE on the doorstep.

CFRE freshwater deployment laboratory

Lake Superior State University's Center for Freshwater Research and Education, on Lake Superior and the St. Marys River.

Six Resource Powered Centers of Innovation

Freshwater

20% of the world's surface fresh water. CFRE, the Soo Locks, Cloverland Hydro, the St. Marys River.

Outdoor Recreation

Trails, lakes, and shorelines that give outdoor product makers a real proving ground.

Skilled Trades

Working quarries, ports, and manufacturers. The trades are still building in the EUP.

Air Mobility

Long runways and wide, low-traffic airspace. Near-border and maritime flight testing for drones, unmanned systems, and advanced air mobility.

Natural Resources

Forests, quarries, agriculture, and the resource industries that built the region.

Energy

Hydropower, grid resilience, renewables. The EUP's energy mix is its own innovation surface.

Binational Innovation Pathway

Sault Ste. Marie is the only twin-city U.S.-Canada metro on the Great Lakes. We are building the lowest-friction binational pathway in North America. The geography is next door.

University R&D engine

Three universities at one bridge: LSSU, Algoma, and Sault College. Cross-border research, faculty, and student talent on tap.

Two markets, one door

Canadian companies land in the U.S. American companies land in Canada. One door. Two markets.

Support on both sides

Discovery, coaching, and connections on both ends of the bridge. Headwaters North on this side. Partners on the other.

Funding stacked

State. Federal. Provincial. Binational. We work both funding stacks so founders do not have to.
